madras nalla madras
methuva poravuga yaarumille
inga sariya thamizh pesa aalumille
aambalaikkum pombalaikkum vithyasam thonalle
aniyayam aathadiyo....................
is the song that comes to my mind whenever i hear the word Madras and that is how I like to refer to my city as well. Chennai doesnt really do it for me. And so when Taj Coromandel announced the #madrasweek festival at Southern Spice I was quite curious to see what they had whipped up.
Before we dive in, let me tell you this is one restaurant that will wow you with their dishes and a visit you will remember for a long time to come.
They have created a separate a la carte menu showcasing the signature dishes from Madras and everything down to the filter kaapi at the end had me feeling right at home. Here is a visual journey of the evening that was...
The variety of vadams [fryums] served with four kinds of chutneys...
The yummilicious kozhukattai [with the sweet coconut jaggery filling]
Banana dosa, kuzhi paniyaram and adai served with a super spicy chutney
The main thali - Kaikari kadamba salna (Vegetables simmered in a traditional Coconut curry); Madras Urlai Kara Kari (Baby potatoes roasted crisp and tossed with tempered spices); Vadacurry with set dosai, along with few other side dishes that were delectable and delicious... I also had egg kothu parotta..
The desserts- Kasi Halwa [ made with white pumpkin] and Payasam [rice milk sugar]
The hot filter kaapi
If someone were to ask me what the flavours of Madras were, I would direct them straight to Southern Spice to taste their dishes. It doesnt matter if Madras week was over, their menu is quite extensive and oozes with the flavours of the city and the region. The Chef and staff will give you insight into the dishes which adds to the whole experience... As they say food is goes beyond just food, it is all about the history, culture, traditions and more...
