Food Tales - The tale of the idli
After a brief hiatus, am back with more tales... Few days ago, had been invited by friends for breakfast and she had made both idli and dosa. Plates were laid out, the table was set and she began serving us. She placed a dosa and 2 idlis on all the plates. I quietly went around the table, picked up a plate and removed one idli and went about eating the rest with the yumm chutney she had made. There was also the spicy milagai podi that was crunchy and delicious.. Just as we were all done with the 1st round, she opened both the containers and offered us idli or dosa. I automatically reached out for the dosa while few others went for the idli.
That was when she remarked " oh I forgot you are not too fond of idlis".. I smiled and said its alright, am not that fussy when am out...
But yes, truth is idlis are not my favorite, I go for them only if nothing else is available or if there is a yumm chutney/sambar to go with it. I also prefer idli when am travelling as it is safe to eat the hot steamed idlis.
I have this other best friend... she has a good laugh everytime I visit them, for she makes idlis often as her kidss love it and then she watches me push every bite down with a plunger and a semi frown on my face. She laughs as she mutters "may you find a guy who demands idlis every day" and my retort would be "I shall send him to you, you can feed him, stuff him and send him back"
I have no clues as to when this love-hate affair with idli began but it has been with me for as long as I can remember... there have been days when I forego breakfast cos it is the boring idli and other times when it stares me in the face as if to say "I dare you"
Is there any dish/item/ingredient that you love to hate?

[Recipe] Tomato garlic chutney
Damn, it was nearly 7.40pm and I hadnt cooked dinner yet.. Did a mental run through of all that I had and after a short debate I knew what I was going to make for dinner. I had decided to make Pongal for dinner. Wanted to make it with Saamai but noticed there were bugs in the unopened sealed packet [had bought two packets a few weeks ago, was done with one and now this second one was goner], dumped it and went with rice option.
Phew, the main was decided, but what about the side? This is when I walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge and stood staring at it as if an idea was going to spring at me. Kaboom.Well, it kinda actually did.
Here is what I made,
Spicy Tomato Chutney:--
Tomato 2 roughly chopped
Dry Red Chillies 3
Garlic 4 cloves
Tamarind a tiny piece
Salt to taste
Water- 1 tsp just to get the blender going
For tempering:
Oil 1
tbsp
Mustard seeds 1/2 tspUrad dal 1 tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Hing a pinch
In the blender, add all the ingredients and make into a thick puree. If needed, add the water.
In another pan, add the oil and do the tempering
Now add the puree to the tempering and allow it to cook well for a good 5-8mins till oil starts coming out on all sides.
It is now ready to be devoured..
Perfect for any plain rice, dosa, and was good with pongal as well.. Spicy and tangy, with strong garlic flavour..

[Recipe] Pottukadala Chutney
I wanted to make something for the Dosa, but was unsure what.. Couldnt make onion based as grandparents dont eat, so waited for gramma to return from temple visit. Asked about chutney/thogayal options and she suggested making this with pottukadala..
What you need:Pottukadala[broken roasted gram] - 1 cup
Thengai thuruvinadhu [grated Coconut] - 1/5cup [or more]
Puli [Tamarind]- a small ball [size of the new Rs5 coin]
Pachai milagai [Green chilli]- 3
Ennai [Oil]- 1 tsp
Kadugu [Mustard seeds]- 1tsp
Broken uluthamparuppu [urad daal]- 1tsp
Uppu [Salt]- to taste
Thanni [water]- to grind
Variation:
Poondu [garlic] -3 pods
Varutha Verkadala [roasted peanuts] - a handful
How to make:
1.In a pan do the tempering- add oil, mustard seeds and broken urad daal- let them splutter
Also add the green chillies, saute them slightly.
2.Remove the green chillies and add the other ingredients to it- pottukadala, coconut, tamarind, salt, and water [this is also when you add the garlic pods-no need to saute them]
3. grind to a paste [ texture depends on your preference, i like it a bit coarse]
4. Pour the tempering on top and serve
Left- Garlic chutney and right is the plain one
Tastes yumm with Dosa, idli, poori, and even pongal.
